SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Main Accountabilities Statement:

The General Maintenance, Plumber maintains and repairs the hospital’s mechanical plant, buildings, and associated equipment, performs preventive maintenance as assigned, performs unscheduled maintenance as assigned, and performs other duties as assigned. Primary specialty will be plumbing and heating systems. Reports to Facility Manager or Team Coordinator. Duties are performed under general supervision following Support Services and Health Center’s policies and procedures. Requires ability to work closely with team members on multiple assignments to meet deadlines, with minimal supervision. Will be expected to seek solutions to operational barriers and contribute to continuous quality improvement. Position interacts via alpha numeric pager, telephone, written or verbal communications with all employee levels within the Support Service department and clients, patients, and customers. Must conform to all safety policies and procedures in effect. Works as assigned in emergency or disaster situations.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:

High School graduate or equivalent required with emphasis in industrial arts plus journeyman status by apprenticeship or practice. Must have two years plumbing experience and understand plumbing codes. Must successfully complete the required training program within the defined probationary period. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and customers. Ability to read, follow instructions (verbal and written), and use basic math skills as required. In addition, incumbent must be flexible and adapt easily to changes in work schedule, assignments and environment.

EXPERIENCE:

Previous experience in the mechanical or electrical and plumbing field is required. Must be familiar with major systems (plumbing, mechanical, and electrical), and their repairs. Must be able to reading mechanical prints and schematics. Hospital experience preferred.

PRINCIPAL JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES (Essential Functions):

Upon assigned a task, selects appropriate tools and parts to complete assigned preventive or unscheduled maintenance task. Maintenance actions must be completed IAW applicable codes and regulations, for example, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Electrical Code (NEC), National Plumbing Code, Federal, State, and local regulations, Health Center’s Policies and Procedures, and other governing or regulatory bodies. Completes daily reports, for example, itemize work performed, lists parts consumed, list parts ordered, record time spent on work orders, and other paperwork as required. Operates systems in emergencies to protect life and property and performs other duties as assigned: is on-call for emergencies or disaster situations and maybe assigned to other maintenance duties when required. Performs housekeeping duties in mechanical rooms and surrounding mechanical room areas. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor. Maybe required to work overtime with little or no notice. Work could be performed on 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift. Position can be scheduled for on call coverage. Specialty is plumbing, to include heating and cooling plumbing systems. Trains employees, makes mechanical repairs, perform preventive maintenance, checks various systems, completes daily paperwork to document time, work completed, parts uses, etc. Maintains all plumbing and heating systems to maintain physical plant and equipment mechanically sound and in working order. Obtains material and tools from storeroom, repairs or replaces leaking pipes, fittings, faucets, valves, traps, and pumps using had tools, power-driven tools, welding equipment, solder etc. Makes mechanical repairs on pumps and compressors by replacing work parts, such as, bearings, seals, rings, gaskets and coupling, rebuild stop valves, reducing valves, steam traps and other mechanical devices by replacing worn parts, adjusting, welding, etc., to return equipment to working conditions. Unplugs drains as required. Performs preventive drain cleaning. Performs preventive medical vacuum system cleaning. Perform other duties as assigned.
