Los Alamos National Laboratory Craft Superintendent 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Superintendent 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Position Overview

Help move Los Alamos National Laboratory into the future as a Craft Superintendent who is responsible for oversight and management of Collective Bargaining Agreements for Union Craft trades supporting the Logistics Central Shops (LOG-CS). As a Logistics Craft Superintendent, you will be a part of highly creative, diverse, fast-paced, efficient team tasked with tackling the most fascinating and challenging problems in our laboratory's facilities.

The Craft Superintendent position requires a close working relationship with the LOG-CS Group Leader, Craft Superintendents, LOG-CFTTRG Training, and Labor Relations. This position requires daily craft management along with oversight and deployment of a growing workforce that are deployed to Maintenance and Construction. The selected candidate will ensure that craft work is executed per the current Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA's) and jurisdictional settlements. The Craft Superintendent must be knowledgeable with specific assigned trades and terms within specific agreements, memorandums of understanding, and the overall CBA's.

Superintendent 2 ($92,300-$151,000)

The successful candidate will:

  • Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Assures safety and security compliance, maintains required safety and security training, and makes safety and security an integral part of every task, including taking the necessary steps to stop work if continuing the job is unsafe or compromises security.

  • Responsible for hiring, termination, furloughs, and rotations in consolations with Labor relations of assigned craft teams.

  • Serve as a Technical Advisor to deployed craft teams.

  • Work with deployed construction and maintenance mangers regarding craft rosters and deployments.

  • Work directly with LOG-CFTTRG to develop training plans for all assigned craft personnel.

  • Oversee disciplinary actions for assigned craft.

  • Must understand skill sets and qualification requirements for each craft type.

  • Work with Occupational Medicine to manage worker injuries and restricted duty cases.

  • Provide input in the development of long-range manpower needs.

  • Work with Labor Relations to resolve jurisdictional issues.

  • Work with Union Business Agents to address Union grievances, personnel issues, and general concerns.

Superintendent 3 ($101,700-$168,200)

In addition to what was outlined above, the Superintendent 3 will be required to:

  • Provide guidance, training, and instruction to lower-level Craft Superintendents.

  • Evaluate processes, programs, and procedures for potential improvements.

  • Musts have experience in leading and facilitating safety initiatives and programs.

  • Must be able to lead change projects with excellent initiation skills and follow-through abilities.

What you Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Experience in identifying safety concerns including incident investigations and development of lessons learned or other corrective actions.

  • Moderate understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.

  • Moderate knowledge of facility maintenance, project, and construction policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience in multitasking, customer service, and conflict management.

  • Applicant should display a working knowledge and/or experience working in multiple hazardous facilities.

Additional Job Requirements for Superintendent 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Extensive knowledge, experience, and ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

  • Experience directing work with an extensive understanding of collective bargaining agreements.

  • Demonstrated experience and skill in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining action to be performed on problems affecting performance.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership, mentorship, prioritization, and management of assigned employees in a collaborative and participative environment to build strong teams.

  • Ability to create, lead and direct cross-functional program teams in executing developed program plan.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience and skill with labor relations to include bargaining unit employees.

  • Knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, and requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and utilize a computerized work management system in maintaining and tracking job activities.

  • Demonstrated skill in the preparation and presentation of oral and written reports.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2: Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
