Job Summary

The Employment Specialist is responsible for all individualized job development and job placement/coaching. Develop individual job development and training plans to maximize job match and performance, independence, and integration on the job site and in travel activities. Work in conjunction with program participant, funding source personnel, employers, and parents/guardians as appropriate in job development, placement, and support activities. Establish and maintain effective business relationships with local community employers to facilitate employment opportunities.

Primary Duties

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. These duties and responsibilities will be rated on the Annual Performance Review.

  • Conduct intakes, interest inventories, assessment interviews and job skills training for referred consumers in order to develop a targeted job search strategy and make appropriate job matches. Assess and evaluate assigned consumers on skills and behaviors. Perform community-based assessment and/or situational assessments as requested by Vocational Rehabilitation.

  • Offer job club to prepare consumers for competitive employment through familiarization with job application forms, anticipated employer expectations and general interview procedures. Counsel the consumer in job seeking skills, including grooming and hygiene.

  • Develop Jobs in the community matching consumer skills, interest, and experience. Maintain ongoing contact with potential employers to identify placement opportunities for individuals completing programs/or transitional employment; as well as develop/implement marketing programs to increase job placement opportunities.

  • Conduct on-site job analysis, provide consultation as related to reasonable accommodations and work site modifications as required. Educate prospective employers about job coaching services, our agency support services, tax credits, and ADA.

  • Complete in an accurate and timely manner all evaluation/assessment reports, progress reports, case notes, incident reports, contacts, reviews, attendance, and other supporting documentation.

    Additional Responsibilities

  • Establish, develop, and maintain positive relationships with VR counselors, school transition coordinators and others to ensure referral and service coordination. Act as a liaison between referral agencies and North Carolina Regional Office by attending relevant meetings as requested. ∙Maintain up-to-date employee information as required for case files and funding sources. Where an employment relationship with North Carolina Regional Office is involved, ensure appropriate documentation and compensation according to wage and hour law or other appropriate law or regulation. ∙Complete in an accurate and timely manner all monthly billing reports, consumer reports and other supporting documentation. Maintain case records according to CARF standards.

  • Coordinate and participate in Interdisciplinary Team process and other meetings pertaining to employee goals and objectives. Prepare Individual service or annual plans and updates as required.

  • Provide consulting/counseling services to community-based employers to assist with employer/consumer work relationships.

  • Ensure placement environment is safe.

  • Participate in other training required by funding source(s) and/or Corporation such as Human Rights training. Service Capacity: (includes, but not limited to the following) ∙ADVP ∙Supported Employment, Individual ∙Supported Employment - Group ∙ Day Supports ∙ Supported Employment. ∙ HCBS Waiver –I/DD Services Day Supports - Group & Supported Employment.

  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

    Qualifications: Education, Experience, and Certification(s )

  • High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED), required plus one-year experience in employment programs; or 2 to 3 years related experience in supported employment programs; or other equivalent combinations of education and experience is required. Associates Degree preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license and/or access to reliable transportation to perform work-related travel required. Eligible drivers must have a good motor vehicle record (MVR).

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of principles and techniques working with people with disabilities.

  • Ability and willingness to work in a variety of activities and environments to support individual program goals.

  • Ability to respond to business requirements in the placement and performance of required work by assigned program performance.

  • Ability to organize and implement programs for people with disabilities. ∙Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with program participants, all levels of staff, community agencies, employers, and families.

  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and prepare program documents.

  • Ability to work effectively as a supervisor, peer, and subordinate to accomplish necessary work.

  • Effective internal and external customer relations skills; ability to participate in and respond effectively to inquiries, negotiations, complaints, and team activities.

  • Demonstrated experience with desktop computer systems; proficiency in use of Word; Access; Outlook; VocShop a plus.

  • Proficiency in First Aid, CPR, or other safety skills a plus.

The employee may occasionally lift or move products and supplies, up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
